Microsoft continues to be mum regarding Xbox One console sales numbers.
Instead of releasing hard numbers regarding sales figure of the Xbox One family of consoles, Microsft has instead opted in releasing a vague statement, claiming that Xbox One sales
have increased from last year, “Xbox One sales are up 15 percent over the same period last year,” according to Mike Nichols, Microsoft’s chief marketing director.
The quote was part of an official Microsoft blog post regarding record-breaking numbers of their latest console, yet the post fails to mention any specifics in terms of sales figures.
Interestingly enough, back when the Xbox One first launched, Microsoft happily shared the initial shares figures of the Xbox 360 successor, after it passed its 10 million unit milestone, three months after the launch of the Sony PlayStation 4. Microsoft isn’t shy of numbers entirely, as the company still shares numbers but focuses on Xbox Live user metrics instead of sales figures of actual consoles — with the latest blog post citing an increase in 13% of its userbase, with 600,000 new friends being made on the popular gaming platform.
One possible reason Microsoft is choosing to be quiet about its sales number is due to the huge disparity between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in sales. According to a post on the Verge, EA apparently let it slip that Microsoft’s black box has sold around 19 million units around January 2016 which when compared to Sony’s 35.9 million PlayStation 4 sales, suddenly appears less impressive.
The Verge also took the time to reach out to Microsoft regarding the sales numbers, in which Microsoft replied by stating, “We are continuing to look at engagement as our key metric for success and are no longer reporting on total console sales. We continue to see strong growth with time spent on Xbox Live and look forward to bringing more unprecedented experiences on Xbox One, Windows 10 PC and mobile.”
it will be interesting to see what Microsoft has in store for E3 2018 which is just around the corner.
