Despicable Me 3 Earns Nearly $100 Million Opening Weekend

Despicable Me 3 Earns Nearly $100 Million During Opening Weekend, Doesn't Meet Universal Studio's Estimate

Despicable Me 3 easily took over the box office during its opening weekend, yet even with the strong numbers, it failed to hit Universal Pictures Estimates.

Despicable Me 3 grossed nearly $100 million only days after its June 30 premiere. Earning a little over $75 million, Despicable Me 3 fell $8 million short of Universal Pictures three-day estimate for the film. Furthermore, Despicable Me 3 fell $10 million behind the studio’s pre-weekend expectations. It should also be noted that the film was shown in over four thousand theatres, a record high amount. Despite not hitting Universal Pictures projected numbers, the movie outperformed Sony’s Baby Driver which opened at around $21 million. Despicable Me 3 currently sits at 62% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, one of the lowest scores in the franchise.

Released in 2010, the first Despicable Me opened at around $56 million. Although Despicable Me grossed the lowest of any of the films, the movie was only shown in about 3400 theatres. With a score of 81%, Despicable Me is currently the highest rated of the films on Rotten Tomatoes. In its lifetime, Despicable Me grossed over $250 million worldwide.

Despicable Me 2 released two years after the first, in 2013. The film currently stands as the highest grossing entry in the main series, reaching over $80 million in its opening weekend alone and over $365 million in its lifetime. Additionally, Despicable Me 2 is currently the second highest scoring entry on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 73%.

The success of the Despicable Me franchise led to a spin-off film, Minions. Centred around the characters of the same name, Minions earned more in its opening weekend than any of the main series entries, grossing over $110 million. In its lifetime, the film went on to earn over $1.1 billion. Minions currently stands at being one of the thirteenth highest-grossing films of all time, despite having the low rating of 56% on Rotten Tomatoes. A sequel for Minions is currently in production.

Despicable Me 3 is out in theatres now in Worldwide.
