The popular Dragon Ball Z anime series is getting a new fighting game with Arc System Works behind it.
The announcement of a new game based off the world-renowned series, Dragon Ball Z, appeared in a Bandai Namco press release dated June 12, 2017. Titled Dragon Ball Fighters, the game is a 2.5D fighting game, similar to Arc System Work’s previous title, Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator. In addition to its 2.5D graphic style, Dragon Ball Fighter will feature a three-versus-three battle system. Players will be able to create their own three-person team and take part in high-speed battles that the series is known for. Dragon Ball Fighters is planned to launch worldwide in early 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Arc System Works recently released Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, an updated version of Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator. Using Unreal Engine 3, the game made use of cel-shaded graphics in place of hand-drawn sprites that the series is known for. The updated version of the game added extra characters and contain the most recent gameplay patches and balances.
While Dragon Ball Fighters will be the first game in the franchise developed by Arc System Works, it won’t be the first time the studio is involved with series. Arc System Works previously worked on the graphics for Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Botuden, a 2015 fighting game for the 3DS. The game featured over one hundred characters from the series with nearly 20 being fully playable while the rest function as assists. A game called One Piece: Great Pirate Colosseum was later developed in Japan for the One Piece series, which featured cross-functionality with Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Botuden. One Piece: Great Pirate Colosseum was never released outside of Japan.
It’s likely that more information on Dragon Ball Fighters will be revealed when the game is formally announced on June 12, 2017.
