Minecraft Reaches 122 Million in Lifetime Sales

One of the biggest success stories in the last decade of video games has reached yet another milestone with Minecraft reaching over 122 million in lifetime sales.

That’s not the only stat worth announcing as Mojang and Microsoft also announced that Minecraft currently sees 55 million unique players on a monthly basis. These types of numbers are ones that other video game series can only dream of. The details of the achievement were announced on the official Minecraft Twitter account.

Previously, Minecraft reached 20 million in sales back in January of 2013. If the very impressive sales were not enough to convince you of the game’s success, then perhaps the massive $2.5 billion USD that Microsoft used to buy Mojang may change your mind. The deal was made in 2014, but as time has shown, Microsoft has not kept the series exclusive to their own platforms.

Minecraft was originally released back in November of 2011, but it had already grown a large following in its early testing stages. Since then it has arrived to a wide variety of systems, but it was first released on the PC. It was then released on the Xbox 360 in May of 2012, while a PlayStation 3 version was released on Dec. 17, 2013.

In 2015, Nintendo announced a partnership with Mojang and Microsoft to bring the beloved series to the Nintendo Wii U. The game was eventually released on Dec. 17, 2015. Half a year later in May of 2016, a free update was announced for the Wii U version that would include 40 character skins, new music tracks, and themed textures, all from the world of Super Mario.

Minecraft continues to uphold its strong popularity and you can find yourself a copy on just about every platform. For computers, it’s available on Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux, while mobile devices include Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. Console versions include Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita,Wii U, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch. It’s also on Apple TV!
