Altered Beast and Streets of Rage are classic Sega franchises, hearkening back to the glory days of the Genesis. And now they may be entering a brand new medium: film and television. According to Variety, Stories International is partnering with Circle of Confusion to produce Altered Beast and Streets of Rage media.
A variety of Sega series are getting film and television projects. As Variety reports, these include Shinobi, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, The House of the Dead and Crazy Taxi. These works won’t be produced strictly in Japanese, either. According to Stories International, the works will be made for an international audience. “[Stories] said Monday that it is in the process of partnering with major studios, producers, and filmmakers to co-develop adaptations of these properties as English-language feature films and television series for worldwide release,” Variety reported.
Stories International is a joint venture production arm of Sega Group and Hakuhodo DY Group. Their video production work is some of the most widely recognized across the world, working to create videos for LMFAO, Axe, Reebok, Toyota, Coca-Cola, Electronic Arts and Uber, just to name a few. Circle of Confusion, meanwhile, has worked on such productions as The Walking Dead, Straight Outta Compton and Vanishing on 7th Street, just to name a few. The production entity is based in New York and Los Angeles.
Clearly, Sega is interested in bringing in major production companies for these assets. While viewers should expect these works to have high production values, it’s hard to say what Sega, Stories International and Circle of Confusion plan to do with these IPs. It’s not as if videogame movies and television shows are particularly popular among videogame fans.
