While Edge of Tomorrow, or Live. Die. Repeat., may have been considered a failure at the North American box office, only making $100 million, that hasn’t stopped plans for a sequel to continue moving forward.
Today writers, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, confirmed that they will be attached to the project as screenplay writers . The original writer, Christopher McQuarrie, will still be working on the sequel but what his role will be is currently unconfirmed. Doug Liman will also be returning as the director.
Edge of Tomorrow was written based off of the Japanese light novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, All You Need Is Kill. Both stories reach a similar conclusion but unlike Edge of Tomorrow, AYNIK does not have any sequel material to draw from currently, meaning this film will be written from the ground up as an entirely new story. No plot details have been mentioned nor have actors, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, confirmed whether or not they will be reprising their roles as Bill Cage and Rita Vrataski.
The original film has more success internationally, grossing $270 million, and could influence who the team wants to cast for the upcoming sequel. No release window has been mentioned.
