Sony Introduces the PlayStation Classic

Will Contain 20 Classic Games!

Sony Introduces the PlayStation Classic 4

The PlayStation 1 is finally getting the classic treatment, thanks to a new mini console releasing this winter.

Sony announced the news this morning in a video that went over the design of the system as well as a taste of the games that will be on it. Size wise, the PlayStation Classic is 45 per cent smaller than the PlayStation 1 and it features the same distinct design as the original. It will ship with two replica controllers, which can be used together for games that support multiplayer.

Speaking of games, Sony revealed that the console will feature 20 PlayStation 1 games, but only showed off five of them. The confirmed games for the console are Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. Fans have already begun asking for other classic titles such as Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo 2 and Tony Hawk, and it will remain to be seen whether or not they appear in the final product.

The PlayStation Classic is the latest classic console made by a major video game publisher, the most successful of which has been Nintendo’s NES and SNES Classic. Similarly to Nintendo’s consoles, the PlayStation Classic will have a reset button that lets players suspend their game and come back to it later.

The PlayStation Classic has a virtual disk swap button where users push the open button on the console to cycle through the consoles different games. It’s not clear whether that will be the only way to switch games, or if there will also be a way to do so with the replica controllers as well.

The original PlayStation was incredibly successful, selling over 100 million units and launching a number of high profile franchises. The PlayStation Classic is currently available for pre-order and will launch on December 3, 2018 at $99.99 USD and $129.99 CAN respectively.
