Red Dead Redemption 2 Gameplay Reveals Improved Gunfights, Morality System, and Your Horse

Today, Rockstar Games released a new trailer that shows a first look into the gameplay of the upcoming sequel to their critically acclaimed popular western saga, Red Dead Redemption 2.

In the six-minute trailer, Rockstar announces that Red Dead Redemption 2 “aims to create a living world that is not simply open, but deeper, more interactive and detailed than ever” and will combine “storytelling and gameplay in new ways”. The trailer, which utilizes footage taken entirely from actual gameplay, looks at the environment, story discovery, characters and morality system and a brief look at fighting.

Red Dead Redemption 2 follows the story of Arthur Morgan, a “senior gun” running from the pressures of modern day society with the Vanderling gang. We learn, through the trailer that as they travel on their journey, the game will establish camps where players can play mini-games with the members, do chores and cook, although the precise mechanics behind each of these actions has yet to be revealed. Throughout the game, Arthur will form a bond with the gang members, unlocking new story details, mini-games to play, and side “quests” to tackle.

Similar to that of Red Red Redemption, players will be able to ride and walk across several different landscapes, including mountain environments, swamplands, deserts, and forests. Cities aim to be more diverse in Red Ded Redemption 2, ranging from ranch fare to early modern cities — all populated with a diverse cast of interactable characters.

Gunfighting appears to show some improvement in mechanics. The trailer indicates that each gun comes with its own unique set of properties, recoil and reload times, which Rockstar promises will make for a much more engaging player experience.

New to Red Dead Redemption 2 is the introduction of a morality system where your choices can result in an honourable Arthur or a dastardly Arthur. In addition to traditional gun and fist fights found in the first game, players can now talk to all the characters found throughout the world. Arthur can pick fights, talk his way out of (or into) trouble, negotiate, and make choices that will ultimately affect his moral standing in the game. The trailer stresses that “every choice you make has a consequence”.

And of course, as always, your horse is a staple part of the experience in Red Dead Redemption 2. Throughout the game, Arthur must grow his bond with his horse over time, and how a player treats his animal will affect their bond.

While little is known about familiar features to the Red Dead Redemption franchise, such as the Dead Eye mode, the trailer teases that this along with the promised robbery system will be shown off in the coming months.

Red Dead Redemption 2  is available on October 26, 2018 (which is, coincidentally, the anniversary of the gunfight at the OK Corral, for those readers who are history buffs), on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
