Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Will Have Every Character in Smash History — Nintendo E3 2018

Release Date, Character Roster and More Detailed at Nintendo's E3 Presser

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Will Have Every Character in Smash History — Nintendo E3 2018 2

The next Smash game is called Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and it will feature a roster filled with every playable character ever to appear in the series.

During Nintendo’s E3 showing on Tuesday, Super Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai revealed the extraordinary roster of over 60 playable characters that will be featured in the hotly anticipated fighting game, assuring players that “everyone is here” — a bold slogan that was he repeated several times throughout the video.

See a full list of the character roster at the bottom of this post.

The announcement was a strong affirmation that Nintendo plans to advocate fans’ feverish attention to details. After going through the list one by one, Sakurai went over new details for both returning characters and series staples. These details ranged from Wolf’s new aesthetic appearance (and where these aesthetics derive from in Star Fox canon) to the speed of Marth’s Dancing Blade attack.

The game will start players off with a small roster of eight playable characters (as in the first Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64). Additional characters will unlock progressively and frequently “so it feels like you’re constantly recruiting popular characters to your side.”

Sakurai also went on to discuss changes made to the game’s fighting systems. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a mobility handicap will stack with subsequent dodge-rolls, meaning characters’ dodges will gradually slow down if spammed one after another. A new “directional air dodge” has also been added, allowing players a single evasive move while in midair. A “perfect shield” counter occurs when players release the shield button at the exact moment of contact with incoming damage. Damage has been increased across the board for 1-on-1 battles in order to expedite these matches. On top of those highlighted, several more techniques have been added, including ladder attacks, dash cancelling, and short hop attacks.

Several classic stages are also returning with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including Princess Peach’s Castle, the Spirit Train, Frigate Orpheon, Green Hill Zone, Shadow Moses, and Tortimer Island. New maps will appear as well, including the Great Plateau Tower, based on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
