Assassin's Creed Odyssey Champions the Power of Choice at Ubisoft's E3 2018 Show

Ubisoft’s E3 2018 conference featured plenty of information about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, where players get to explore ancient Greece, choose their own paths, and fight epic battles as either or Alexios or Kassandra.

While in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, players switched between Jacob and Evie, and Assassin’s Creed Origins players got to be Aya a few times, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is different.

For the first time the Assassin’s Creed series, there is a female playable character who gets to be on equal footing with her counterpart. This means when the player chooses Kassandra as their character, they will play the entire game as her.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is more than just an adventure. It truly is a role-playing journey,” said Jonathan Dumont, the creative director of Ubisoft Quebec.

The game takes place during the golden age of Athens, where there was the rise of democracy, modern medicine, western philosophy, and revolutionary art. However, it was also a time of great conflict with the Peloponnesian War raging between Sparta and Athens.

As either Alexios or Kassandra, players will get to explore both land and sea. They will get to customize their ship and even recruit crew members as they battle on their voyage. They will also begin as a simple mercenary,  who, along with the Spear of Leonidas, will take on the quest to save their loved ones and become the hero Greece so desperately needs.

Choices continue to matter in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, as they play into how players can interact with history and the story itself. A clip of philosopher “Sokrates” was shown at the conference to emphasis this. Kassandra’s interactions with him made the players think about, for example, the lives of soldiers doing their duty versus to the life of a thief and murderer.

Kassandra then got to make a choice of lying to him or not — to which he replied, “Our choices are like ripples on water. They seem tiny and insignificant at the beginning, but they can become devastating tidal waves by the time they run their course.”

Over the next few days, gamers can experience Assassin’s Creed Odyssey at E3 in a playable demo. For those at home, a full gameplay sequence was shown.

“Our teams in Quebec and from around the world have spent the last three years putting all their energy, passion, and dedication into this project,” Dumont added.

“We have continued to transform Assassin’s Creed into an epic, RPG experience. An RPG in which you will not just play an odyssey, but your odyssey—shaped by your actions and choices.”
