Amazon picks up TV adaptation of horror podcast Lore

Amazon picks up horror podcast Lore as a TV series

Lore, a horror podcast about urban legends and “the darker side of history” (best described as ‘Supernatural by way of NPR’) has been picked up by Amazon Video for a 10-episode anthology set to launch sometime next year. This news comes from the Amazon Studios panel at New York City Comic Con, where the megacorporation also spoke about the upcoming seasons of Sneaky Pete and The Tick — which likely means both shows have made it past the Amazon Hunger Games-esque Pilot Season. Since Lore has already been given a season order, it gets to skip the line.

The Lore show was announced in April, and has a veritable conga line of producers attached, including Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead), Ben Silverman (The Office), Howard T. Owens (The Biggest Loser), podcast creator Aaron Mahnke, and Glen Morgan (The X-Files). Mahnke has already addressed concerns about the podcast’s future, confirming that new episodes would continue to be released every 2 weeks.

Despite Morgan’s involvement as the showrunner for the Lore TV series, the show will not be a fictional episodic anthology in the vein of Fear Itself, where each episode will tell a decent story. The show will feature “a blend of narration, historical mixed media and cinematically shot scripted scenes,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show will ostensibly pull entirely from true stories, sticking with the show’s “truth is scarier than fiction” mantra.

Lore is the latest podcast to receive a TV adaptation, with a “behind-the-scenes” retelling of pop culture flashpoint Serial currently being workshopped by actual wizards Phil Lord and Chris Miller, through production company Fox 21. The Serial TV show was announced back in 2015, but the weaker reception to Season 2 may have stalled the project. Comedy advice show My Brother, My Brother, and Me is also set for an adaptation, having recently wrapped filming on a 6-episode run on NBC streaming service SeeSo in 2017.
