As E3 approaches in less than a month’s time, Nintendo will not be holding a press conference this year.
CEO Satoru Iwata made the announcement yesterday at an investor presentation. Iwata says Nintendo will shift away from their usually mass conferences in exchange for what Iwata describes as “smaller events specifically focused on software titles for the U.S. market”.
There will be an event tailored towards American distributors, and another to provide Western gamers a practical gaming experience. As far as their Japanese audience is concerned, Nintendo will communicate to them through media such as Nintendo Direct.
Due to Nintendo’s financial shortcomings, this would not be a smart marketing move. Especially when Sony and Microsoft will be taking the cake at this year’s E3, Nintendo can always announce any news via Nintendo Direct, for a small portion of the cost.
Nintendo of America’s Senior Director of Corporate Communications Charlie Scibetta reveals in a press release today the company will host two smaller events on the Tuesday morning of E3, which is June 11. A business partnership presentation will commence at the Nokia theater, while a media gaming event will happen at Nintendo’s booth at the Los Angeles Convention Center prior to E3’s opening.
