The wait for the Last Guardian has once again been extended.

Those looking forward to The Last Guardian and its rat/cat/bird creature will have to wait a little longer now that Sony has announced that the game is being delayed. The Last Guardian was originally projected for a Holiday 2011 release.

“I announced at last year’s Tokyo Game Show that the release timing of The Last Guardian which is currently being developed would be holiday 2011,” said Last Guardian Director Fumito Ueda in a statement. “However, to provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfill First Party Studio’s obligations, I decided to postpone its release timing.”

“I sincerely apologize to all the customers who have been waiting for “The Last Guardian” for so long, but I beg for your patience. I will also announce the new release timing at a later time,” continued Ueda.

The Last Guardian is the third game from Ueda following the highly acclaimed Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Both of those games will be re-released in HD as part of the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection, although that game disc is also getting a delay.

The HD Collection was targeting a Spring 2011 release window and no specific reasons were given for the delay. If I had to speculate, though, I’d say that Sony might be timing the release to help promote the The Last Guardian.
